As photographers in a large university system like Johns Hopkins University,we are often called upon to photograph special collections of archival
material. That could be anything from studio work of finds in the Archaeological
Museum, rare books, medical archives or architectural photography of historic
houses for documentation and publications. April’s presentation covered a behind
the scenes look at several techniques. Both studio and architectural photography.
Also techniques used to document EverGreen Museum &
Library unique fine and decorative arts collection. Originally built in 1858 the
Gilded Age mansion was owned by the Garrett family, whose fortunes were tied
to the 19th century B&O railroad.
Norm Barker is Professor Emeritus of Pathology and Art as Applied to Medicine at
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Norm is an award-winning science
photographer, writer and designer. A graduate of The Maryland Institute College of Art, he also holds a M.S. from Johns Hopkins University in education as well as a M.A. from The University of Baltimore in publications design.
Norm specializes in photomicroscopy and macro photography. He is an Accredited Senior Imaging Scientist and a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society in Great Britain as well as a Fellow of The BioCommunications Association in the United States. He has published ten books as well as illustrating more than forty major Pathology/Medical
textbooks and written numerous scientific articles and book chapters. His photographs are in the permanent collections of more than forty museums, including The Smithsoniain Museum of Natural History, The George Eastman Museum, The American Museum of Natural History, and the Science Museum in London.
